Samsung ST550 – 12 Megapixel Dual View Touch Screen Camera

October 6th, 2009 | by CameraBang |

Samsung ST550 was a big hit in samung digital camera products line. Featuring a 12.2 megapixel with Schneider Kreuznach 4.6x Optical Zoom wide angle lens 27-124mm, this compact camera seems quite promising. But what makes ST550 special is their dual view camera concept, having dual LCD screen that lets you preview the scene from the front and the back. This feature were really helpful for casual camera users that often take their own photos. Well, let’s get on the review.

Samsung ST550 Dual View Camera Picture

The pictures taken with this 12 megapixel samsung camera was quite good, the colors is nice and the view is clear. But I would not recommend taking photos of a moving subject with ST550 since the result tends to blur.

ST550 dual screen gives you a large 3.5 inch touch screen in the back, and 1.5 inch LCD in the front for previewing your shot from the front. The later preview screen is what people buzz about, it really help to make their own-photo-taking activity gives best results. Samsung also make use of its front LCD view in their special Child Scene that animate clown picture hoping that it will help you make your child subjects smile when they look at the clown. The user also should remember to look to the lens and not looking to the front display when taking their own photos.

Samsung ST550 controls seems to rely on their touch screen, the only button they have were power button, zoom, capture and review. To control this dual view camera you have to use the back LCD, and several gesture. Be sure to read the manuals, I’ve come across many people saying that ST550 is problematic and not a user friendly camera, like “How to erase the picture?” and several others just because they don’t read the manuals.

ST550 can be said as a smart camera too. They implemented scene recognition feature that analyze the scene and load a preset for them. The also have a Beauty mode, that makes your face looked better in your photos. Pretty useful right? It can also recognize and memorize the face of your objects, and automatically  focuses on them. But the recognition only last as long as the camera hold an images containing the faces, so when you delete all the photos in the memory card, the recognition is reset to zero. Unfortunately, the expandable memories slot in this Samsung camera provides micro SD slot, and people find it annoying and not reliable due its physical state.

To conclude in this Samsung ST550 review, this camera is a functional camera for everyday photos. Good images, creative modes, and the dual view features were fun to uses. It lacks on taking moving objects, but the still object’s image quality can make up for that.
