Nikon Coolpix S620 Digital Camera Review
September 22nd, 2009 | by CameraBang |
Most people might be agree with me that Nikon has its grip over the high performance DSLR in the camera market. But for now, I would like to review the Nikon Coolpix S620, a compact camera that serves as a fashion and stylish product from the Coolpix series. Bringing 12.2 megapixel sensor with a 4x wide-angle zoom lens, this easy to use camera is ready to accompany you in your everyday photography activities.

Design
Eventhough S620 was intended to engage the fashion digicams market, but its design wasn’t looked so cheesy at all, instead, it concentrate more on the ‘cool’ side of style. The strong and cool image design is what you get from this compact camera. The rotating scroll control of this camera is somewhat disturbing though, since we likely slip one or two photos when we playback our photo shots. But in the other side, Nikon is doing a good job making this rotating scroll to be pretty responsive for quick navigation when you’re already used to it.
Feature and Preset Settings
Coolpix S620 doesn’t offer us much manual control over the camera. But Nikon have put some great features and modes to it, here is the list:
- Smart Portrait System. This system will detect up to 12 faces in one scene you’re taking.
- Blink Detection that provides warning when you’re subject close their eyes.
- 2 Recording Mode, one is for TV playback and the other is specialized to Web video (Youtube upload etc).
- Quick Retouch. Pretty useful when you don’t feel like re-editing your image saturation and contrast on PC.
- Subject Tracking Mode. This feature will try to maintain S620’s focus on the moving subject you’re taking.
Operation, Noise and Image Performance
Nikon Coolpix S620 start up was quite fast since they only need 0.7 seconds and you’ll be ready start taking shots. The images produced with this camera was sharp and have pretty accurate colors. The 128-112 mm lens provides wide-angle view and save us from moving backward too much when we need to fit in our objects unto the frame. For low light photos, eventhough S620 offered ISO sensitivity up to 6400, the quality of the images was not quite good and have too much noise. It seems that Nikon’s distortion control function was not implemented well in this camera.
Nikon Coolpix S620 Review Conclusion and Comparation
One that prefers a good stylish Nikon pocket camera for their casual photo taking activities might be suited with S620, with the price of $200, it was fair enough for its quality. However, if you’re searching a more advanced feature in small size, I might prefer a Canon Powershot S90 that boast more functionality or the longzoomed Canon SX20 IS that made me able to do telephoto with a medium sized compact camera.
